Romans 16:17 ” I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them.”

We’ve all seen it…a Church splits due to dissension and disagreement. Usually there’s a faction of a few disillusioned people who divide the flock by decisive means, and before you know it – the Church is split asunder.
The Greek word for “obstacles” in this verse is most interesting…for it means the trigger of a trap on which the bait is placed, and which, when touched by an animal, springs and causes it to close, trapping its victim. We are told to keep away from such people and their traps.

Micah 2:13 ” One who breaks open the way will go up before them; they will break through the gate and go out.”

This verse references Jesus the Messiah – the one whose death on the cross opened our way to God. Jesus goes before us making a way when there seems to be none. For not only did He kick wide open the gate for us, He is the Way.
And with jubilant shouts, we too can burst through the gate that has kept us from God.

Psalm 41:1 ” Blessed is he who has regard for the weak; the Lord delivers him in times of trouble.”

Do we even pay attention to the poor and needy around us…or are they just problems we’d rather not deal with – so we walk past, or change the channel, or choose not to get involved. But God wants us to not only acknowledge their plight, but consider how we can help them in their struggles…and in doing so, reap the blessings of being Christ to the downtrodden.

I John 4:4 ” You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”

The biggest deterrent we have from doing the Will of God is fear. Fear stops many of us from following that still small Voice pressing us forward. But take courage! This verse shows us we don’t have to fear…for with Jesus living in us, like Him, we also have overcome the world and all the negative emotions attached to it. We have conquered and triumphed over fear because the One living in us is greater than the one in the world.

Job 25:2 ” Dominion and awe belong to God.”

It says in Psalm 47:9, ” The kings of the world belong to God.” He rules and reigns over all…every people group, every country, every person. Stand before the Lord today in wonder and reverence that is befitting only Him…for He is God.

Jeremiah 10:5 ” Like a scarecrow in a melon patch, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good.”

Do you carry your idol around with you? Maybe it’s in your pocket, your purse, on your finger or wrist. But if you think about it…what benefit do you really get from it? What good have you obtained? Idols are like that…no real benefit, other than what it takes.

John 2: 24-25 ” Jesus did not commit Himself to them…for He knew what was in man.”

Yes, Jesus knows us better than we know ourselves. He’s completely aware of every secret sin we’ve ever commited. He knows too well every deceitful, untruthful, and hypocritical thing we’ve ever said or done. But even though Jesus knows who we really are…He’s not cynical or bitter…and He will never lose hope in us.

II Timothy 2:9 ” But God’s Word is not chained.”

God’s Word – His omnipotent voice, and divine revelation, is not bound by time, place or person. His Word is alive, powerful, and effective in all situations, and at all times. God’s Word knows no boundaries…is unfettered by man’s thinking…it has no end.

Psalm 101: 2-3 ” I will walk in my house with blameless heart. I will set before my eyes no vile thing.”

If Jesus suddenly knocked on your front door today, would you let Him in immediately…or would you first race around “hiding” questionable things from His sight? We can become very lax when it comes to things we allow into our homes…things, that at first glance, seem so innocent, but in reality are full of corrupt and disgusting filth. Would you want Jesus walking through your home right now?

I John 3:24 ” Those who obey His commands live in Him, and He in them. And this is how we know that He lives in us: we know it by the Spirit He gave us.”

The indwelling Holy Spirit is our Comforter, our Encourager, our Counselor, and our Friend. Ever the gentleman, that still small voice can be drowned out very quickly in the noise of the world…but the Holy Spirit is also very persistent, and will continue to warn when we’re headed down that wrong path.
