I Chronicles 29:12 ” Wealth and honor come from You; You are the Ruler of all things. In Your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. “

In this prayer, King David was acknowledging that it was only from God – the source of everything –  that he possessed  abilities and achievements.  David was also acknowledging  the sovereignty and authorship of God as he viewed the world around him.  Later, his son Solomon would write in Ecclesiastes 5:19-20, ” When God gives any man  wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work – this is a gift of God.  He seldom reflects on the days of his life, because God keeps him occupied with gladness of heart.”  Recognizing and thanking God for His benevolence in our lives gives rise to one of the greatest gifts we can ever receive…it’s peace and contentment.

Ecclesiastes 11:5 ” As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things.”

One of my very first jobs as a Nurse was in Labor and Delivery…and to this day I still marvel at the tiny perfection of a newborn baby.  For God’s activity is without question evident in the flawless development, and impeccable anatomy and physiology of a newborn.  But what I really enjoyed the most was watching new parents meeting their child for the first time…the awe and wonder of this little creation they held could only testify to God’s greatness and creativity.

Psalm 89:6 ” For Who in the skies above can compare with the Lord?”

As God expressed in Exodus 9:14, “There is no one like Me in all the earth.”  God is just that…incomparable, and matchless to anyone or thing we can imagine here on earth.  He is transcendent and beyond what our paltry human minds can contrive.  Look up into the sky today…take in the sheer vastness of it…now ponder, that’s just a tiny bit of God.

Hebrews 3:4 ” For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.”

We’ve spent several days constructing a retaining wall in the back yard…and I don’t mind saying that strenuous manual labor in the oppressive heat of a Illinois Summer is hard!  But now that it’s done, it was well worth all the sweat.  Genesis 1:1 tells us that, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”   Where we had cement pavers to build with,  God called the universe into being…creating everything we see, smell, and hear out of nothing.  For He is the author and architect of it all…bringing into existence that which was not.

Ecclesiastes 7:29 ” This only have I found: God made mankind upright, but men have gone in search of many schemes. “

We are the crown of God’s creation…created uniquely and distinct from the rest.  We were created in God’s image…righteous and pure.  But that all changed in the Garden of Eden,  when Adam and Eve decided they knew more than God.  And from then on, mankind has connived, conspired and contrived hair brain schemes…thinking we too know more than God.

Psalm 40:5 ” Many, O Lord my God, are the wonders You have done. The things You planned for us no one can recount to You; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare.”

I think when I get to Heaven, the Lord will show me a little slide show.  The theme will be – all the countless times He has intervened on my behalf,  saving me from  dangerous situations, and even sparing my life.  I don’t think our mind can even grasp how often God has rescued  us from ourselves and our dumb thinking.  When that slide show is over, I will then finally come to realize the enormity of His work in my life…how unaware I was about most of it…and I will love Him even more.

John 2: 25 ” He did not need man’s testimony about man, for He knew what was in a man.”

We seldom do something for others totally out of unselfish motives…for usually we have some hidden agenda, whether good or bad.   We’ll do some kind gesture,  with the inner thought of,  “what’s in this for me?”  Or we’ll go out of our way for someone, hoping others will see our sacrifice and praise us for all our hard work.  The Lord knows our thoughts and examines our hearts and will immediately  show us when our motivation is wrong.  For God can bear witness to what lies within all humans…every self-seeking, egocentric, greedy fiber and part.

Psalm 38:15 ” I wait for You, O Lord; You will answer, O Lord my God.”

If you’re praying but not expecting…why even bother?  If you’re simply mouthing words because it’s the thing to do, but  have no hope  that God will answer…why waste your breath.  If it’s only for show that you pray…why even go there if you don’t truly believe that your prayers are heard?  If you’re praying, but not expecting God to move…why bother.

Psalm 33:6 ” By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of His mouth.”

Have you ever gone out into the dark and looked up into the sky?  The vastness of the heavens and the brilliance of the stars are awe-inspiring, and seem to go on forever.  This wonder was created by the Lord in His mighty power… His creative activity on display for our enjoyment.
