After Abraham’s death his enemies came and plugged up his wells to ruin them for any future use. They threw sand, rocks, old wood, dead animal carcasses and garbage into the holes… filling them up completely and leaving them inoperable. And it says that it wasn’t until Isaac reopened them that the water flowed again. What’s interesting in this verse is the word ‘reopened’ which has a two-fold meaning…it means to rediscover and to re-dig. The enemy continues even today to try and plug-up our wells…not with sand and rocks, but with compromise, sinful habits, and worldly thinking. As Jesus told the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4:10, ” If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water.” Wells are necessary for the basic sustenance of life – water. But when your well has been stopped up, the water can no longer flow and you become a barren, dry desert.

John 4:11 ” ‘Sir,’ the woman said, ‘You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep.’ “
Jesus had just offered the Samaritan woman Living Water, but by her observation…He had no means of drawing water from Jacob’s well. We seem to quickly revert back to our humanness anytime we doubt that Jesus can really do what He says. We question if He’s in touch with reality or even realizes the gravity of our circumstances. Subjectively, our biased opinion says, “I can’t see how You can possibly do this Lord.” But if we put aside our humanness and instead take Jesus at His word…miracles will happen.
John 4:13-14 ” Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’ “
We’ve all been very thirsty. An interesting note about the human body…hunger pangs will eventually subside, but thirst will never go away, for our bodies need water to operation and maintain homeostasis, (a stable and normal condition of all systems within the body.) In this Scripture, Jesus is offering the Samaritan woman the kind of water that will not only satisfy immediately, but will become an Artesian well within her. Like a spring rising up with a new and constant supply of fresh water, this living water fills and quenches our thirst unlike anything the world can offer.
John 4: 13-14 ” Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst again. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
We hear and accept the Word of life…the Holy Spirit comes to take up residence within, and we have the reassurance of eternal life. But we also overflow with that living water, for it says in John 7:38, “Whoever believes in Me, streams of living water will flow from within him.” Our lives spill over with joy, peace and love for others to see.
John 7:38 ” Whoever believes in Me, as the scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.”
I’m back to the lowly piece of PVC pipe I talked about yesterday. The purpose of it is to allow water to flow from one area to another. But what if the pipe is clogged with mud, gravel, and other junk? The flow slowly decreases to a trickle, and then stops all together. The same goes for the living water flowing out of us…if we’re “clogged up” with unresolved hurts, fears, and sins of the flesh, the Holy Spirit will be unable to flow through us, and our influence on others will languish. If the irrigation water isn’t able to flow freely, all the crops will wither and die…if the Holy Spirit can’t flow freely through us, those around us will also despair.
John 6:35 ” Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me will never go hungry, and he who believes in Me will never be thristy.’ “
There is only one thing that can totally satisfy the spiritual hunger of our soul…there is only one spring of living water welling up to completely quench our thirst for the truth…His name is Jesus…the Way – the Truth – the Life.
Revelation 22:17 ” The Spirit and the bride say, Come! And let him who hears say, Come! Whoever is thristy, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.”
Whoever…a simple pronoun, but in this verse it makes such a tremendous impact. Whoever, is every person, no matter who they are, or where they’ve come from, that may receive this free gift of eternal life. Our Lord is continually wooing and calling those who are willing to receive this living water…He makes no distinction…He holds no prejudice….Whoever is just that to Him, whoever. Maybe you’ve been praying for a “whoever”, wondering if they’ll ever give their heart to the Lord…know that the Lord is saying to them, Come! … And that He’ll never give up.
