Proverbs 13:10 ” Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.”

Taking offense against another person only fosters conflict and produces  anger.  When our feelings are hurt, we rise up in righteous indignation and can easily allow arrogance to take over at that moment.  We feel disrespected and insulted, not even listening to the wise counsel…for all we hear is an attack on our  belief system…even if that belief system is  corrupted.  The world likes to take offense  over the craziest things…But as a Believer, we need to be wary of allowing pride to color our interactions with others.   Proverbs 9:9 states, ” Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning.”

Acts 18: 9-10 ” One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: ‘ Do not be afraid; Keep on speaking, do not be silent. For I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city.’ “

Satan would like us to think we’re out there working for the Lord alone…like the Lone Ranger, isolated and unaided by others.  Satan would like us to be fearful in talking to others about the Lord…not wanting to offend…wanting rather,  to be “politically correct”, even if it goes against the Word of God.  Satan would like us  to keep quiet, not rocking the boat of this modern liberal society.  Satan doesn’t care if we read the Bible or pray…just as long as we don’t do it in public.  But Satan also knows the power of the spoken Word, and what a transformation could take place… if Christians weren’t silent.

II Chronicles 30: 18-20 ” Although most of the many people who came from Ephraim, Manassh, Issachar, and Zebulum had not purified themselves, yet they ate the Passover, contrary to what was written. But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, ‘May the Lord, Who is good, pardon everyone who sets his heart on seeking God – the Lord, the God of his fathers – even if he is not clean according to the rules of the Sanctuary.’ And the Lord heard Hezekiah and healed the people.”

In these verses we see the spirit of the Law vs the letter of the Law.  In Matthew 23:23 Jesus chastised the Pharisees for their legalism and in doing so losing sight of the more important matters of the Law…things like justice, mercy, and faithfulness.  The Lord always searches the heart for honesty and sincerity and will reward accordingly.

Isaiah 6:10 ” Make the heart of this people calloused…”

Are you walking around with a hardened heart?  When we’ve been hurt over and over again, our only recourse is to protect our heart…our inner person.  We put up a wall of callousness  and apathy so no one can hurt us again.  It’s  effective, but makes us appear uncaring and insensitive to others.  It’s also really lonely within those walls…but we’re too afraid and distrustful to allow anyone in…so instead, we put on the mask of indifference.

But you may also be walking around with a hardened heart from sin.  Everything is going great… you  can make it on your own…you don’t need the Lord.  But obstinately refusing God will only lead to destruction.

Daniel 3: 16-18 ” Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, ‘O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and He will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if He does not, we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.’ “

The three Hebrew children knew just where their strength came from…there was no need to defend themselves before the king.  For their faith and trust in God enabled them to rest in the knowledge that the battle was the Lord’s, not theirs.  We too don’t need to fight our battles alone…the Lord is standing ever ready to advocate for us.  All He asks is that we walk in faith while He does the work.

Proverbs 14:3 ” A fool’s talk brings a rod to his back, but the lips of the wise protect them. “

Prudence…a word you seldom hear now a days.  It’s definition means to have carefulness and foresight.  If before we spoke,  we would employ both these concepts mentally…I dare say we would  not be blurting out things we wish we hadn’t said.

My wish for you this Christmas Season

Just think, you’re here not by chance, but by God’s choosing.  His hand formed you and made you the person you are.  He compares you to no one else – you are one of a kind.  You lack nothing that His grace can’t give you.  He has allowed you to be here at this time in history to fulfill His special purpose for this generation.

II Samuel 1:26 ” I grieve for you, Jonathan my brother, you were very dear to me. Your love for me was wonderful, more wonderful than that of women.”

In your life time,  you’ll only be able to count on one hand the same kind of friendship that David and Jonathan had.  Their relationship was extraordinary, amazing and unique…and much closer than being biological brothers.  When you have such an intimate friendship with someone, it doesn’t matter the space of time or distance, the friendship still endures . If you haven’t connected recently with this friend…don’t you think it would be a wonderful time to do so?

Deuteronomy 4:32 ” Ask now about the former days, long before your time, from the day God created man on the earth; ask from one end of the heavens to the other. Has anything so great as this ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard of? “

The Lord is God.  Over the ages we have heard and seen His awesome signs and wonders.  We have been privy to these in order that we might “know” beyond a shadow of doubt  that the Lord is God of all.  There is no other above Him…the Lord is God.

Galatians 2:5 ” We did not give in to them for a moment…”

Last night our Bible Study was discussing how easily we compromise to the world’s standards.  How one small concession only leads to another, and another, until we suddenly find ourselves far from God and the path He has chosen for us.  A wonderful analogy was shared by our friend who is employed with a co-worker in a large,  cavernous warehouse with many, many fluorescent lights…of which slowly over time, were going out one by one.  Neither lady realized it until one day they both exclaimed how dark it was inside!  As they toured the building, they discovered there were 18 fluorescent lights out…no wonder it was so murky!  Compromise is just as insidious…happening slowly…one acquiescence at a time…until suddenly we too find ourselves in the dark.
