Melchizedek was both…king of Salem (the early name for Jerusalem) and high priest of the Most High God. In these verses Jesus is also being shown to have combined both kingly and priestly duties. For it tells us in Hebrews that Jesus entered the Most Holy Place, once for all, by way of His own blood and for our sake, and made atonement for the sins of all people. And in doing so, we can now have this eternal hope…secure and reliable, that will never fail.

Hebrews 7:17 ” For it is declared: You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”
There are many similarities that have been written about Melchizedek and Jesus Christ. From Psalm 110:4 it says, “The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind: You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” This King Melchizedek of Salem (early Jerusalem) was also a High Priest…combining both the kingly and priestly duties and later gaining Jewish respect as an ideal Ruler. In Hebrews 5:6 it tells us that Jesus is the Great High Priest called of God…but He is also the King of kings and the Lord of lords…and Ruler over all. Jesus is the supreme King and Priest…ruling with justice and compassion.
