Psalm 55:13 “…my companion, my close friend.”

A few years ago we had the very difficult task of having our beloved dog, Whimsy, put down following a lengthy illness. Both my husband and I mourned for that funny, stubborn, but always entertaining dog…and for the hole that was left in our hearts on her passing. We had talked about getting another dog, but neither of us were ready to put Whimsy in the past and love a new dog. Until last week…when Duncan came into our home and our hearts. It reminded me of a clipping I have in my Bible about a conversation between God and Adam . Adam was complaining to God that he was lonesome, so the Lord said,” I will create a companion for you that will be a reflection of My love for you… regardless of how selfish, childish and unlovable you may be. This new companion will accept you as you are and love you as I do, in spite of yourself.” And God gave him a dog…a reflection of God’s love for us, his name of reflection of God Himself…For Dog is God spelled backwards.

Psalm 119: 130 ” The unfolding of Your Word gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.”

The Lord is faithful…each time you read the Bible, He will open up new concepts, ideas, and insight that you hadn’t read before. It’s almost like a beautiful rosebud unfurling in front of you…petal by petal, as He reveals His amazing truths and makes the Word come alive.

Psalm 90:4 ” For a thousand years in Your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.”

We constantly get upset with God when our timetable and His don’t match…when He doesn’t do things in the time frame we think they need to be happening. That’s when we should realize that God’s timing and ours are no way alike. The Lord is not concerned by time…His concern is imperatively with the final outcome…not by how long it takes to get there. Not surprisingly then, if you look up the Hebrew words for thousand and day, they can both mean the same… an indefinite period of time. The Lord’s timing may not be always to our liking…but it’s always perfect.

Psalm 119:59 ” I have considered my ways and have turned my steps to Your statutes.”

The Lord is forever wanting us to think about our actions and behaviors. Are they righteous or wicked…good or bad…helpful or harmful? God’s precepts are the standard by which we should focus our Way in this world, but the decision to do so is entirely up to us. As it says in Joshua 24:14, “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve.”

PSALM 139:1 ” O Lord, you have searched me and know me.”

The Lord knows you intimately…He understands you better than you understand yourself. He knows every deep dark secret in your heart and still loves you. The Lord not only sees everything you do, but keeps count of every step you take. No one knows you better than the Lord…before even a word is out of your mouth He knows it completely. What better person than to put your complete trust in Him today.

Psalm 42: 11 ” Why are you downcast O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.”

This particular verse is repeated two more times in Psalm 42 and 43…why so? Do you ever give yourself a pep talk? Something like, “I know you can do it, you can do it! Hang in there and just do it!” I believe the Psalmist was doing the same thing… “Ok Soul, why are you moping around? Instead, we need to be remembering all the things the Lord has done for us in the past…and all the wonderful things He’s going to be doing for us in the future… so now, get up, and get going…you have nothing to mope about!

Psalm 102: 17-18 ” He will respond to the prayer of the destitute; He will not despise their plea. Let this be written for a future generation, that a people not yet created may praise the Lord.”

Psalm 102 is titled – A prayer of an afflicted man…When he is faint and pours out his lament before the Lord. The writer of this Psalm wants the generations to come after him to know that God not only hears our prayers, but answers. The Lord has heard my cry for mercy, He has not sneered at me and turned away. Hence, I will declare His righteousness to a people yet unborn, that they in turn may rejoice and trust that the Lord will always hear their prayers. A people not yet created…that’s you and me!
