Jesus had just told the Disciples that where He was going, they couldn’t go with. Was Simon Peter hurt, or smugly contending that he would proudly die along side Jesus when he asked why? Peter was one of Jesus’ closest Disciples, a big, loud man who had a habit of speaking first and thinking later. Was his outburst a show of hurt feelings, or brash vibrato…of concerned protection, or a foot in the mouth quip?

II Peter 1:16 ” We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.”
Simon Peter had lived, traveled, and spent three years with Jesus. He had no need to make up tales about what he saw and heard…those times were burned in his memory forever. And besides, any fabricated stories wouldn’t be able hold a candle to all the miracles and wonders he saw firsthand and experienced.
II Peter 1:3 ” His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness.”
As we gain truth in Him, our physical, earthly existence is changed forever. As we gain truth in Him, our devotion towards Him grows. As we gain truth in him, we’re set free.
I Peter 2:17 ” Show proper respect to everyone: love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.”
Only Simon Peter uses this term “brotherhood of Believers” in a unique way. He likens our natural birth into our family to the family we become part of when we’re born again. Suddenly we have brothers and sisters all over the World…our new birth in Christ making us all family.
I Peter 2:12 ” Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us.”
Simon Peter spells it out very clearly…you will be insulted, slandered, maligned, and just plain bad mouthed by the world…there’s no way around it…and being a Christian doesn’t exempt you from it. But what we do need to bear in mind, is that the unbeliever is watching very closely to see our reactions…will we repay evil with evil, or will they see Jesus in us? The final words of this verse are also very important, for we may never see the influence of our doing good in this lifetime…but it never should detract us from continuing to do what is right.
I Peter 1:23 ” For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.”
To be born again…the Greek word utilized here was only penned by Simon Peter, speaking of Spiritual rebirth or new birth. We have traded our deteriorating bodies for ones that will never wear out. We have exchanged our mortal beings for immortal ones. We have move from this temporal world to eternal life when we are born again.
John 21:17 “The third time He said to him, ‘ Simon son of John, do you love Me?’ “
During the Last Supper, Jesus had foretold Simon Peter that he would betray Him…not just once, or twice, but three times. So in this interchange at the end of the Gospel of John, we see the risen Jesus asking Simon Peter not once, or twice, but three times if he loved Him. Each time He asks this question, we see Jesus restoring Simon Peter back into relationship not only with Himself, but as one of the leaders among the disciples, and ultimately in the early Church.
