Jude 10 ” Yet these men speak abusively against whatever they do not understand; and what things they do not understand by instinct, like unreasoning animals – these are the very things that destroy them.”

Jude was warning the Church that they had allowed false teachers to infiltrate the Body of Believers.  These men were called Libertines, and their corrupt doctrine suggested that Christ’s grace released them from all authority or restraint.  They believed in absolute freedom without any control by God’s moral law.  Their creed was, “Our souls are saved by grace, so whatever we do with our bodies, which will perish anyway, doesn’t matter! So we can do whatever we want, whenever we want to.”  But Jude saw it as blaspheme and corruption both morally and spiritually…and likened them to wild animals… without conscious or control.

Romans 2: 28-29 ” A man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man’s praise is not from men, but from God.”

Circumcision of the heart is what the Lord is calling all of us to.  Deuteronomy 30:6 states, ” The Lord your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants so that you may love Him with all your heart and with all your soul and live.”  This circumcision of the heart is literally a removing of the flesh…our fleshly self, our carnal nature, to show loyalty and obedience towards our Lord.  This inward work of the Holy Spirit is then outwardly manifested…apparent and plain to all, as the love of God shines forth in our life.

Psalm 23:4 ” Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”

What has a greater hold on your life and takes up a bigger space in your heart, fear or faith?  When you find yourself in a deep, dark place, do you seek solace and consolation in the Lord…or do you allow fear and doubt to reign instead?  By placing our trust in God and facing down our fears, He will lead us safety through the valley,  no matter how dark or threatening it may appear. Our Christian walk is a long series of trust-building exercises that strengthen our faith, and reinforce our confidence in God.  So that when we find ourselves in that valley and hear God say, “Fear not!”  … we’ll remember what He’s done, and place our trust in Him because of it . Our faith is built up one dilemma at a time…one dark valley at a time.  And each time we choose faith over fear…fear loses some of its grip on us.

Ephesians 6:13 ” So that when the day of evil comes…”

You’ve all heard, bad things happen to good people…and it’s not “if” but “when” trouble will come your way.  And just because you call yourself a Christian doesn’t mean you’ll somehow be insulated from the evil in this world.  For in your lifetime you will have sickness, setbacks, and loss…there’s no getting around it…for we all live in a very broken world.  But it’s how you react and face each trouble that will make all the difference.  With God you have the ability to stand your ground when evil comes your way.  II Corinthians 6:7 tells us, “…in the power of God; with weapons in the right hand and in the left.”  You can stand and face down anything the world throws at you with God’s Word… His truth in one hand, and His promises in the other.  We don’t have to live in fear of tomorrow.  For we have weapons to extinguish all those fiery darts thrown our way.  We can then stand firm in the power of God…faithful not fearful, confident not cowering, trusting not trembling.

Job 1:21 ” Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.”

If you’ve ever had to pry the fingers of a two-year-old open around a toy they won’t share…you know just how selfish humans are about their possessions.  But I Timothy 6:7 tells us, “For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.”  Everything you have or have ever possessed was a gift from God.  But we consider possessions like potato chips…one isn’t enough…we want the entire bag!  So where is the balance?  The answer is contentment…happiness with what we have or don’t.  We can then look at our possessions from God’s perspective and hold on to them not with tight fists but with loose fingers.

Romans 9:20 ” But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? “

I’m not accusing anyone of flagrant disrespect towards the Lord…for we’d all be quick to deny it.  But what I’m asking  is more about the covert and secretive disrespect we show the Lord…the brashness that no one seldom  knows of.   The sin of omission is simply not doing what God wants us to do.  It’s apathy and neglect on our part, but also thinking we know more than He does.  Now we’re not brazenly telling God we refuse…we’re just quietly ignoring it…hoping it’ll just go away.  But one of the most glaring signs of covert disrespect we can show God is to declare to Him, ” I can’t do that!”    So as the verse asks…just who are you to talk back to God?

Psalm 55:22 ” Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous fall.”

If you’ve been a Christian for any length of time you know to take your emergencies to the Lord.  But what about the good things you’re doing for Him?  Do you feel overwhelmed with responsibility  and stressed in your ministry?  Or is the Lord pushing you into new directions and you’re resisting out of fear and doubt?  This verse says to cast your cares on the Lord…all of them.  Think of it like a oxen yoke with two oxen shouldering the work together…each pulling in the same direction.  Give your concerns to the Lord – whatever they are…work as a team,  and see His glory revealed.

Ephesians 2:3 ” All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts.”

All of us do it…we daydream.  Pleasant fantasies that transport us from the drab and boring into over the top imaginings.  But if we indulge in these musings more and more, they will soon take over our life…for the real world can never compete with fantasy.  And it’s here in this verse we’re warned about willful pleasure-seeking thoughts.  As humans living in a sinful world –  ungodly thoughts are going to drop into our minds…thoughts that can even shock and embarrass us.  Like, “Where did THAT come from?!!)   But it’s at that moment we have to take captive that thought and make it obedient to Christ. (II Corinthians 10:5)  For if we give in and allow these thoughts to have their way in our mind…our vivid daydreams will lead us farther and farther from God into disobedience.

Hebrews 12:3 ” Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”

Most of us don’t know what it means to be persecuted for the Gospel…to suffer for our beliefs…enduring hardship for the sake of His name.  Most of us have never persevered under threat of bodily harm…or death, in order to reach others for Jesus.  So why then do we lose heart and become offended so easily when we meet opposition?  Suddenly it’s not fun anymore and we don’t like how we’re being treated…so we quit.  Galatians 6:9 tells us,  “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”     Not giving up means surrendering our life under the Lordship of Jesus Christ and looking to Him as our example of righteous tenacity.

Jeremiah 17:7-8 ” But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

It’s easy to trust the Lord when everything is going great in our lives.  When we’re happy and healthy and all around us is peaceful…it’s almost effortless to put our faith in God.  But it’s what happens when the unexpected and  the unanticipated crash into our lives that really shows how rooted and grounded we are in Him.  Droughts are long dry spells when rain doesn’t fall…the plants wither and the ground cracks.  There are times when all of us can go through “spiritual” dry spells.  Times when our soul seems parched, our body is withering, and our mind cracking under the stress… and we feel God is so far away.  But if we’re firmly rooted in the streams of living water, regardless of the trial, we can still flourish and grow.
