Around the Pool of Bethesda the sick, infirmed and disabled gathered…this particular man had been there for over 30 years. So why did Jesus ask him such a silly question? On the surface, why wouldn’t he want to be healed…but Jesus wasn’t just asking him if he wanted to be well, He was asking if he had any hope left. The power of hope is amazing. While there is still hope, anything is possible, and God can move in miraculous ways. For it says in Ecclesiastes 9:4,” Anyone who is among the living has hope.” It’s only when hopelessness takes over that we become powerless and apathetic. There is tremendous, transforming power in hope…hang on to it.
We have been doing a Bible study on Wednesday nights on the book of John and this study is by N.T. Wright. I had to go back to chapter 5 to review what NT Wright had to comment about this person at the pool of Bethesda. NT’s comment is as follows ” Clearly the man Jesus found lying there had made a way of life out of his long wait for healing. Jesus’ question to him is, perhaps, quite pointed: do you really want to get better, or are you now quite happy to eke out your days lounging around here with the feeble excuse that someone else always gets in first?” I think we tend to get lazy in our daily walk with God and look for excuses. I know I have been guilty of that myself a time or two. I think we have to work at having complete trust and faith in Christ otherwise it is easy to become complacent and complain all the time.
