Isaiah 29:15 ” Woe to those who go to great depths to hide their plans from the Lord, who do their work in darkness and think, ‘Who sees us? Who will know?’ “

Talk to someone who is struggling with a pornography addiction and sure enough they’ll use the excuse, “What I do in the privacy of my own home is my right.” And then they’ll follow it up with, “And I wasn’t hurting anyone with what I was doing alone at night.”  They are rationalizing and attempting to explain away what they already know deep down in their heart is wrong.  For we can’t hide anything from God’s sight.  And no matter how dark it is…God still sees what we’re doing.

Romans 5:10 ” For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life!”

Think back a moment to your “BC” days. (Before Christ)  Maybe you had heard about Jesus, but He was far from what you wanted in your life back then.  You were content to be in charge…doing things your own way.  But in your rebellion you were also alienated from God…spiritually dead and blithely headed to Hell.  It was while you were still estranged from God that He reconciled you to Himself through Christ. (II Corinthians 5:18-19)  It was while you were still in rebellion that Jesus redeemed you… taking on Himself your sins that you may have a right relationship with God…and eternal life.  The bottom line is…long before you were thinking about God…He was thinking about you.

Jeremiah 8:15 ” We hoped for peace but no good has come, for a time of healing but there was only terror.”

In all our lives we will go through darkness…not the kind caused by sin or disobedience…but darkness that comes out of fear and confusion in this broken world.  But while we are crouched down in the Valley of Despair,  we need to listen…for the Lord will be speaking life-bringing truths into our soul.  Precious truths of encouragement, and exhortation that will sustain us during illness, pain, and loss.   Isaiah 50:10 tells us, ” Let him who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God.”

Isaiah 5:20 ” Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.”

Even within my lifetime I’ve seen this huge shift of what we consider right and wrong.  And with the advent of mass media, the Internet, Snap-Chat, YouTube, and Hollywood…we see our societal mores slowly morphing into something our Great-grandparents would be appalled at.  But this blurring of ethical principles and practices didn’t happen overnight…for it relied on man’s pride,  rebellion and apathy to flourish.  So now we sit, so desensitized, we don’t even react anymore to what we know is wrong…but if we do, we’ll likely find ourselves being chastised for being intolerant and narrow-minded.    Job 24:13 warns of this Spiritual blindness…of evildoers who rebel against the light, who don’t know its ways or stay in its path.  I ask Heavenly Father, that we would be enlightened by Your Word, and that You would illuminate our minds with Your truth,  that we may be able to discern right and wrong correctly.  Amen.

Colossians 1:13 ” For He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the Kingdom of the Son He loves…”

To paraphrase Acts 26:18…We are to turn from spiritual darkness to the light of Jesus Christ… from the limited power of Satan to the infinite power of God, so that we may receive forgiveness of our sins and a place among fellow Believers who are sanctified by faith in Jesus.  The Lord has snatched us from danger and set us free…the chains have been broken off and we are no longer a slave to sin and the jurisdiction of darkness…for the Kingdom of God is now residing within our hearts. (Luke 17:21)

Ephesians 2:4-5 ” But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions – it is by grace you have been saved.”

We can’t begin to fathom God’s great compassion towards us.  For we are separated from Him by our sin… spiritually dead…with no hope.  But God saw us through eyes of unconditional love…looking beyond who we were, to who we could become in Christ Jesus.  This gift of grace is extended to all…for it says, “it is by grace you have been saved.”  The work has already been done, it was accomplished on Golgotha when Jesus was crucified.  There is nothing we can do to receive it, for it is God’s unearned and unmerited favor that bestows this free gift  of eternal life on us.  We may never be able to fathom God’s mercy, but we can accept and trust in His Son, Jesus.

Psalm 112:4 ” Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for the gracious and compassionate and righteous man.”

This verse tells us that even in the midst of suffering…God’s love shines forth and His favor surrounds us as with a shield. (Psalm 5:12)   Circumstances can still be dark around us, but people will notice something different…a light shining forth from us, as we steadfastly  put our faith and trust in God.  Situations may not change, for we live in a broken world…but what can change is our attitude  and reaction to them.
