In these verses Jesus is speaking of the Holy Spirit…assuring His disciples that the Counselor would be coming, exposing the guilt of the world. And when He came, He would lay bare the man-centered world-view that ignores or even denies eternity and views our existence only by material standards and selfishness, greed, power, lust, and ambition. That’s why the Holy Spirit is excellent at showing us right from wrong using one of His most powerful attributes…His compelling, decisive, and relentless conviction. The conviction of the Holy Spirit is determined and unyielding…cutting to the quick in the deepest, darkest reaches of our soul…for He knows everything and will doggedly shine a glaring bright light on our sin until we relent. For if we’d be honest with ourselves, we don’t need the Holy Spirit telling us something we already know…there’s unrepentant sin in our life.
