James, the half-brother of Jesus, became a leader of Jewish Believers in Jerusalem. The major theme of the Book of James was to appeal to Believers that it was necessary to demonstrate inward faith with outward actions. In James 1:19, he wrote, “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry…” And later in verse 22 he added, “Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves, Do what it says.” That’s because, many times, what a hurting friend just needs is a listening heart, not a harsh sermonette…a caring soul, not a opinionated rant, and a loving spirit, not a scolding lecture.
