The Old Testament prophet Zechariah’s ministry was one of encouragement… his words pointing to the coming Messiah…both the First and Second Coming. In this passage, Zechariah is exhorting the need for ethical conduct and behavior over tired ritual observances. In other words, to do what their fathers had not done. He urges them to apply God’s Word in fairness and integrity to all social and personal dealings with others…always with kindness and empathy. Zechariah then goes on to tackle the oppression and exploitation of those marginalized in society…specifically, widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. He orders the people to make provision for their care…highlighting God’s love and concern for the powerless in society. Finally, he warns them against plotting evil, harboring ill intentions, or mistreating others… which are all sinful actions in the sight of God. (Matthew 5:21-22)
