The primary value of salt was as a preservative in Biblical times…preserving food from decay. But in the bigger picture, it represented the Believer’s responsibility to maintain moral and spiritual integrity. When Jesus told His disciples to “Be the salt of the world.” He meant they should hinder the world’s corruption…promoting purity rather than fostering spiritual, ethical, and relational corruption. (Colossians 4:6) Thus our role in the world today is to, like salt which enhances flavor, improve the world through actions and words. But Jesus also warned of salt losing its saltiness. (Luke 14:34) Showing likewise, Christians values and conduct need to be focused and distinct from the culture around us. Jesus called us to be salt, not sugar. We’re here on earth at this very time in history to preserve what is true, not to make it sweeter and more palatable for the world to accept.
